Symposium in Istanbul

International Symposium about torture and prisons. ------------------------------------------------- While all over the world the imperialist attacking wars lead by US imperialism is increasing, also is the struggle for social and national liberation increasing. The exploited nations and the masses are advancing the struggle against imperialism and the reactionary administrations in their own Countries.

It has become a reality that the ruling class since hundred of centuries tried to exploit and oppress the people by putting pressure on them, let them disappear, or let them suffer under torture etc. and use many other tools to oppress. Likely, one of the most effective places of this kind of oppression, and where torture is being practiced in its most brutal way are the prisons. From the chains of the middle age towers to the punishment of the quarry- (the so-called stone-break workers) prisoners, to the underground chains up to today’s most “modern” technology cells the prisons have been an important weapon for the ruling class. Nowadays in many places in the world especially in Countries where political prisoners are held, are used as torture centers.

Turkey and Turkey-Kurdistan wich has a long history of the resistance in prisons the question of isolation is a clash-point between the prisoners and the political power in the Country. Today the wave of attack where prisoners are forced to wear the one type uniform and are put under the pressure to work is growing. Added to this the pictures of the base in Guantanamo how Afghanistan prisoners are being treated, the photos wich showed the situation in the prison Ebu Garib in Iraq wich is under occupation. In Nepal the Maoist leaders wich are fighting against the Nepal Monarchist system who were arrested by the Indian government without giving any kind of constitutional explanation, the news about the situation in the prisons becomes known by the democratic public.

Now on 15th August thousands of Palestinian Freedom prisoners went into a hunger strike in the prisons of the Zionist Israel state demanding their basic rights. These are examples that come into our mind right away because everywhere in the world there are different kinds of exploitation, and bad live conditions, torture and isolation.

For this reason we as the ILPS Turkey-section see it as a task and responsibility to carry this issue to an international level this is also a point for wich the ILPS is struggling for. With the knowledge of this importance and in favor for the solidarity of the struggling prisoners on the 3 October we will make an international symposium with the issue on prisons and torture.
